| African
Enterprise has been engaged in evangelistic campaigns
in Africa since 1962. In other words, AEs objective
is to reach all men, women and children in the urban
centres of Africa with the message of Christ.
AE’s
stated mission is “to evangelise the cities
of Africa through word and deed in partnership with
the church”, and, since 1962, the Word
– the Good News of the Saving Grace of Jesus Christ
– has been taken from Cape Town to Cairo, from
Monrovia to Mombassa, AE teams reaching out to thousands
of people, many of them shattered through thousands
of disasters, many simply searching for God. They include
Pan African missions to Kigali, capital of Rwanda, Kampala,
capital of Uganda, Accra, capital of Ghana, and two
major outreaches first to nine and then 12 cities in
Egypt. Many people have come to commitment in Christ.
A major project aimed at the youth of South Africa –
the Foxfire Programme, with its team of young evangelists
with energy and a huge heart for the Gospel –
is constantly evangelising in schools, universities,
churches and wherever young people gather. They are
helping to take AE into its second generation. AE also
offers an exciting mission thrust – a Seniors
Ministry to retirement complexes and old aged homes
in South Africa, working with and through local churches
which, after the mission, continue to minister in the
complexes.
But, though evangelism lies at they very heart of AE,
the realisation that one cannot preach Christ without
also revealing his practical love for people has led
AE firmly into the area of social concern – the
“deed” part of the mission statement.
Evangelism
is a closely defined part of mission, but our ministry
extends beyond the proclamation aspect to embrace many
areas of mission. The outreach is not an event but a
process, which starts with the first exploratory visit
– and never ends! When the AE mission team leaves
and returns to base to plan the next outreach, the local
church is left to continue what is, after all, their
mission. Apart from Pan African missions to cities,
we undertake outreaches to smaller urban clusters and
communities. They can last 10 days or four, depending
on the needs of the churches involved.
AEs
city-wide mission methodology is long-term, and a high
priority is encouraging and training the local Church,
particularly leadership. Several years can go into preparing
a mission. Fostering and encouraging unity among the
local churches and para-church organisations is primary,
as is the training of Gods people in evangelism,
prayer, pastoral care and follow-up. This process is
co-ordinated by Songe Chibambo, AE's Pan-African missions
Director, and acting South African missions Manager.
